(UPDATE) YOUWIN: Nigeria FG Launches N50billion Job Creation Fund

The Youth Enterprise with Innovation in Nigeria (YouWiN!) Programme is a collaboration of the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Communication Technology (CT), the Ministry of Youth Development and the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development that will launch an annual Business Plan Competition (BPC) for aspiring young entrepreneurs in Nigeria, in line with the Federal Government’s drive to create more jobs for Nigerians. The programme will be implemented in partnership with Nigeria’s private sector, who will be requested to provide funding support.

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday flagged off a N50 billion seed fund for job creation (Youth Enterprise with Innovation in Nigeria-YouWin) (http://www.youwin.org.ng) scheme, saying that the programme was designed to tackle youth unemployment in the country. YouWiN! is a Project of the Federal Government of Nigeria…supporting innovative business ideas

Jonathan said, at the event in Abuja, that his administration was committed to creating job opportunities for the youth by empowering them to become job providers and not job seekers. He said the YouWin programme conceived for the purpose aims to create between 80,000 and 110,000 sustainable good jobs over the next four years.

Said the president: “In the course of the campaign for the April 2011 elections, I identified unemployment as one of our biggest challenges that we must address to unlock our vast potential. My concern is, let’s identify those that have potential so that we can empower them.

“This year when we met in Malabo, it was discovered that Africa was one of the continents where youth population is very high. In the United States of America and other continents they have population control measures especially in the area of child bearing, but we discovered that in Africa there are no such control measures.

“And I believe that at that rate we will be able to create jobs faster. And that was why when we created the budget for this year we set aside a N50 billion fund for job creation. Today we have come up with this programme to see how we can help the young people who have the creative ability and turning such creative ability into money.”

He however called on state governors and the National Assembly to collaborate with the federal government in order to expand the programme.

Earlier, the minister of finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, stated that the scheme was not all about winning but focuses on empowering those with good business ideas to put them into use, while those without good ideas would undergo training to grow their businesses.

He said the programme was geared towards replicating what has been done in other developed economies.

According to her, “You know that unemployment is a big problem in Nigeria. We thought it was not all about talking but getting things done. It was a challenge for us trying to come up with some ideas; we are trying to do something that’s been done in other parts of the world. We want to empower our youth to start thinking of how to create jobs, not how to get a job.”

“It’s not all about winning in the competition, but it’s about empowering them to move their business forward. The programme is focusing on empowering those with good business ideas to put them into use, while those without good ideas will undergo training to boost their ideas in order to move their business forward. We will link them with banks to source for the capital they need. But more importantly, we will make sure that we monitor this programme vigorously.”

YouWin is a business plan competition aimed at job creation by encouraging and supporting entrepreneurial youth in Nigeria to develop and execute business ideas.

Its evident that the Government of the day is set to navigate a new trend but one question readily pops up here: are we going to really see the right people get the money? Has there been checkers to ensure the wrong folks dont lay hands on the fund?

  11. I thank the gov.of the day for bringing this programme.let the programme come into reality ,so that we can do something on our on to help our self & developed our dear country.

  12. It is a good thing which shows that our president has a good heart and good intentions for the youths of this country. I have nursed my passion to start a business a long time ago. It has only remained a dream. Help is very ellusive in NIGERIA. Idream everyday to have empowerment .

  22. Hahahahaha… this Nigeria self nothing person will not hear and see, now our dearly beloved federal government has openly claimed to be participating in fraudulent activities. Chai we are clamoring for change but finally the cankerworm has crept into our F.G that’s great news to hear. they are looking for those they will turn their brains but GOD pass them.

I will want him to know that Nigeria youth are very talented in all fields of life, we have potentials but limited resources to pull things and get to our targets. Most Nigerian youth like me have great knowledge in computer science and a lot of other good jobs but establishing ourselves is the big problem since most were not born with “silver spoons” in their mouth. so i’ll be very grateful if possibly we the poor masses can benefit from this scheme. I know and believe that we can make Nigeria great. this has always been my prayer, and with this scheme, I pray that people “like me” will have opportunities to showcase what we have to make our country better.

  25. Am really impressed at last that such a holistic program of empowering, and firing the the enterprising spirit in the Nigeria youth is finally here.

  26. interest in the farm and empowerment to upgrade the equipment in the farm, like Fish, grasscutter, poultry e.t.c

But how come there is no date 4 second round submission while there is a date for second round closing?
How is that d same day, entry closes training starts, how POSSIBLE? Won’t there be a compilation, Getting in touch with those selected? HOW? HOW?? HOW???
So MANY Lacunas???????? It shows clearly that there is no synergy with dates in the planning.

  31. This is a lovely and moral idea. Nig wil now discover that we have cretive minds in this great nation. Its well with Nigerians

  32. ok, but the point remain keeping true to the purpose of this pro gramme. which is to raise enterprenure to their right full place, so we can make an import dependent economy, production dependent and help close the gap in goat and cow importation which is at 56% & 62% respectively. where we are the world largest cassava producers without any export, makes nonsense of our collective intelligence as one of the world most smartest people. this is our time to rain let us take it.

  63. are u sure that this is not another way of diverting N50billion cool cash to their respective pockets. if not, how can the fedreal govt promise to spend N50billion on this project yet fail to contact professional scientists and developers to create and monitor the youwin site which will cost just a peanut of the overall cost. its a shame that in every good ideas, fraudsters take up the opportunity to loot and our govt aiways shows their lack of experience in every aspect of governance. yet they would not hand over to a more experienced competitors and learn from them.

  64. is d Youwin program still running ? How can I be a partaker? This is my no 080….. Juliusclassic

  66. This is a wellcome development, what our president is doing to the benefit of the generality of Nigerians. I love it.

  68. This is an awesome idea. I am one of the beneficiaries. I pray that it will be continued and the Lord will give us grace to do well in our businesses.

  69. Youwin project is a welcome. Let it be extended to secondary school leavers, those who has no means of attending tertiary institution . Again referring some group of applicant to the bank for loan is a step toward stopping or killing the project. The grant will help many to succeed. The bank demand from loan seekers is hampering many small and scale businesses

  71. l did applied for this youwin and was not selected, though it was not on Agric.sector.
Could they still be any second chance of applications after this very round? Because l am hoping to…
    Thanks

  72. The “youwin” approach is a brilliant and welcome development in this present Nigeria. i wish that those of us in north-eastern Nigeria can benefit from this youwin programme to boost our businesses. I am an interior decorator in Gombe state with so many apprentices under me. some of the senior apprentices who have already learn the trade are now been paid for their services to the business, but there is a serious difficulty in maintaining the statusquo as businesses are not moving well as they used to in the past, due largely to the security situation of the region. However, we in Gombe state are bettter placed than other north-eastern states, but we do need governments intervention to boost our trade and continue to accomodate apprentices as well as employ some after their graduation from learning the trade.

  73. Wow visiting here 5 years later is amazing. This article really helped my business. Thanks.

“This is a very good opportunity to me as an entrepreneur by my president and his team. this will really go a long way if i get part of this opportunity it’s going to help my business (POTTERS CLEANERS) to move to the next level.”
