The Relevance of Your Church

What you are about to read is a mixture of fun and learning. You would do yourself a lot good if you approach this with a sense of learning and mind that wants to expand. If you have been asking yourself, “why do I have to keep going to Church?” Further below, you will see a reason why you should.

Jimmy Durante was asked to do a show for World War II veterans. He told them he was very busy but if they would not mind him doing one short monologue and leaving immediately for his next appointment. They agreed. When Jimmy got on stage, he went through the short monologue, then stayed and stayed. Soon he had been on stage 15, 20, then 30 minutes. Finally, he took a last bow and left. Backstage, someone stopped him and said, “I thought you had to go after a few minutes, what happened?” Jimmy answered, “You can see yourself if you look on the front row.” In the front row, there were two veterans; each of them had lost an arm in the war. One had lost his right arm and the other had lost his left. Together, they were able to clap loudly and cheerfully.

Church should be a place where people come as they are and do things together in unity no matter how rich or how poor they are. We must reach out to others in order to strengthen others. Relate effectively with the people you have seen over time in your Church. Someone next to you in Church has what you need. How would you know and how will he/she help you if you are not in a quality friendship relationship with him/her.

This reminds me of a Church in Lagos Island, Nigeria. One of the pastors works in Chevron, while another Pastor runs a catering services outfit. Imagine, they fellowship under the same roof and attends the same meeting but they do not know what each other does. A day came when the Pastor that works in Chevron was looking for caterers to give a contract of serving breakfast and lunch to other Chevron staff. It was after the Pastor that works in Chevron gave the contract to someone else that he got to know that his fellow pastor runs a catering services outfit. Funny enough, they have sat together in Church couple of times when the search was on.

How many new friends do you make after your Church service? You came alone and you left alone and thereafter, you go about telling people that they don’t care in the Church you went to. How would they care when you have choose not to relate with others. Church is a place where diverse people from different culture and background get to mix. Next time you go for a Church service, make sure you make at least one new friend.
